Quick Tour of Maritime Rotterdam for secondary education
Unaccompanied walking route
The port city of Rotterdam has changed over the centuries from a sleepy fishing town to Europe’s most dynamic port. This short walk of 2.9 kilometres lets pupils experience both the port and the metropolis using their own smartphones. Using historical photos and videos, they compare the past against the present. Educational quiz questions add depth.
Practical information
Price: Free of charge, excluding water taxi.
Maximum group size: To decide for yourself, no maximum group size.
Duration: 60-70 minutes.
Available daily between 10:00 and 17:00 hours. Also on Mondays, during the weekend and school holidays.
Virtually and/or in real life, pupils pass the bombed-out Waterkwartier, get spectacular views of the Erasmus Bridge and the historic harbour Veerhaven. An introduction to big-city entertainment on trendy Witte de Withstraat completes the walk.
Route on your own smartphone
The teacher supervises the walk. Pupils walk the route using their own smartphones and the supervisors can use a sheet with additional background information.
If there are several groups on the same trip, this is an excellent auxiliary programme: while one class gets to work on a museum lesson inside, the other experiences the port of Rotterdam outside, and vice versa.
That’s why!
- A perfect fit for geography courses.
- Ideal before or after a lesson in the museum.
- See both the port and the big city.
The Quick Tour of Maritime Rotterdam does not necessarily need preparation, but pupils do need already to have downloaded the app (izi.TRAVEL) at school or at home. The pupils can then start the tour outside at any time.
