Zuid

Willem van Haaften's tattoo shop, also called Tattoo Willy on Katendrecht, existed from approximately 1955 to 1985. Diorama by Henk Schiffmacher at Zuid station, 2002.

Jane: Come on Mees, we're going to Rotterdam South! Mees: Wow... there is really a lot to see here, what is so special about this place, Aunt Jane?
Jane: Many new ports have been built in this part of the city. Men who wanted to work in the port came to South Rotterdam and lived with their families near their work. A whole new part of the city was created!
Mees: And what are those large passenger ships doing here?
Jane: Did you know we were just at Hotel New York? 100 years ago, these types of ships from the Holland-America Line left there. Migrants went to Canada and America. Looking for a better life!
Mees: Hence those people with suitcases in the photos. And look there, there's a tattoo shop!

Jane: That is Tattoo Willy's tattoo shop, which was located in Katendrecht. Katendrecht, that is a part of Rotterdam South, where sailors and sailors liked to come. There were many cafes, jazz clubs and it was a lot of fun. There were many tattoo parlors where sailors got tattoos.
Mees: And why are all those photos of that delicious food hanging in the corner?
Jane: Many migrants also come to live on the Cape, as Katendrecht is also called. In 1911, many Chinese came because their work on the ships was at a standstill. They stay in Rotterdam and open their own restaurants, the first Chinese restaurants in Europe were in Katendrecht! Mees: Rotterdam is certainly a super diverse city.
Jane: That's right! Rotterdam is a city with people from 180 different countries. So you can enjoy delicious food from all kinds of different countries here.
Mees: I'm craving a nice chicken curry sandwich, Aunt Jane. Let's continue to the next station.
