Feijenoord

Model of a modern ship that has both an engine and sails. If there is enough wind, the engine can run less quickly or even turn off completely. Model of the WASP ship 'Ecoliner', maker AllOnScale, 2022

Mees: Feijenoord, I know that! From the football club! Jane: Now you do! But 175 years ago, Feijenoord was not a famous football club, but the place to build ships! Mees: Where? Do you still see that at Feijenoord?
Jane: No, the shipyards are all gone now. But the first steam ship was built here, while all ships still had sails. Rotterdam really led the way! The steam engine allowed ships to sail on time and no longer depended on the wind.
Mees: And after the steam engine?
Jane: Then ships get an engine that also becomes bigger and stronger.
Mees: But I also see a large sailing ship at the back... what is that?
Jane: Ship engines are polluting for people and nature. So another way is being sought to move ships forward…. Mees: Another ship with sails!
Jane: Who knows… it would be good if we used sustainable energy!
