Pernis
Rotterdam receives one hundred million tons of crude oil per year. The 'Esso Cambria' was the first mammoth tanker built in the Netherlands that could transport oil in large quantities. The 'Esso Cambria', maker company C. Dubbelman, 1969. Collection Maritime Museum Rotterdam, object number M2947
Mees: And where did we get off now, Aunt Jane? It's completely dark here!
Jane: At Pernis station!
Mees: Pernis? Never heard of it!
Jane: I understand that…. The village of Pernis is a part of Rotterdam that is located in the middle of industry.
Mees: That must be a terrible place to live, a factory in your backyard.
Jane: That's not too bad, just read Stan and Guido's story, they live there very nicely!
Mees: And what kind of factories are those?
Jane: They are petrochemical plants. Here they make all kinds of other products from crude oil. Gasoline of course, but also plastic, medicine, soap…. Products that you and I use every day! Just look around you, everything here has oil as a raw material.
Mees: Do all these products contain oil????? That's really bizarre!
Jane: And do you see that big ship, that big oil tanker? The oil is delivered to the factory, the refinery, in those types of ships.
Mees: That is indeed a very large ship. As long as they don't have a collision, because then all the oil will spill into the sea!
Jane: They have come up with a solution for that! These types of oil tankers now have a double hull, making it more difficult for oil to spill into the sea in the event of a collision.
Mees: It better!
